Provided they dont get like your fizzogg you'll be ok, because i wouldnt wish that on anyone
Now moving swiftly on from Steve’s bits a serous thought, what you can do with steel and brass (not zinc or aluminium) is once de-rusted is rinse the items before then immersing the parts in hot or even boil caustic soda this will kill any remaining acidic reaction, plus caustic being a strong alkyd also eats rust without touching the steel but it takes a lot longer than using a acid in fact weeks. This technique is basically how they dip and strip classic car bodies these days, an acid solution followed by alkyd solution then acid one again until all the rust has gone, and all that is left is clean paint and rust free steel. So there is no reason why this process could not be used on very heavy corroded items or items which are made from high hard metals such as Relic firearms, finish the process with a dip in phosphoric acid and you’ve added a corrosion inhibiting agent to help prevent the whole process starting again.

Some more examples of vinegar cleaning. These are unusual examples because..........I forgot I'd got them in soak and I left them in the vinegar for more than 3 days !!!!!
Oops
I thought they would be ruined. But, after a quick scrub with a Brillo pad and a jolly good rinse, the results were amazing !
Before and after 'treatment'......
