Article about: Hi Just wondering if when handling your items do you wear gloves? I have heard many different ways of handling your items though this way seems to be the most recommended. Thanks Cameron

You can keep them in silicone socks meant for storing guns. It'll protect them from the elements.
I've got one of those too. It has a gun in it.........

The white cotton gloves are best and just for a laugh, because I like living dangerously, they come in very useful for a bit of fun.

Keep them handy and when your better half announces she's done the housework and dusting, pull out your white cotton gloves, put them on and just run them along the edge of the furniture.

Watch the fury erupt on her face and then run like hell...........

i wear gloves. the cotton kind that are a few bucks for a bag full.

i use these because many of my medals are mint and as previously noted, an invisible figure print will be found obvious later as the figure print itself will oxidize leaving a print of rust.

a black wound badge, or badge which is not mint, i will handle without gloves. it's a case-by-case thing. you know which ones not to handle.

i also use them religiously for handling photographs... another place where finger prints can wreak havoc.

    Hello there,

Never have worn gloves handling anything. These items survived a World War and half the fun of collecting the stuff is to be able to hold history in your hands.....

my response and yours, seen together, are my favourites.

this is because, rest assured, every medal i have bought from you in the past has been lovingly cradled in gloved hands since the day they were unpacked!

far be it from me to disturb your fingerprints.

oh, the futility of my ways!

come to think of it, i have one on the way from you. what to do.... gloves? or no gloves? i have a few days to monitor this thread, collect diverse opinions, and to ruminate!

No gloves for me but I do wash my hands to remove any oils or salts.

    I agree with Bennet,
Sometimes gloves, sometimes not. I also wash my hands before handling anything without gloves.

I never wear gloves when handling stuff - not even when cleaning or restoring items. And I have the skin disorder's to prove I'm telling the truth! After handling guns in my collection I just wipe them over with an oily rag. Knives and bayonets I own have a bit of beeswax polish on them to protect the metal. It really is better to use cotton gloves though. You won't end up with hands like mine then!
