I hope this is the correct forum for post-WW2 Soviet armour.

I have just returned from a 10 day visit to Socotra and whilst the nature of the visit was flora and fauna related, I did happen across what appears to be a derelict example of Soviet armour, dug-in on a beach on the western tip of the island. My guide explained that the Russians at some time in the past supplied Yemen (probably the Southern republic prior to unification) with weapons. Apparently the tanks broke down more often than they ran so the Yemeni military dug them in (there was about a 1/2 dozen that I saw) along the coast as a protection against Somali pirates. I have to say that what protection a rusty, immobile tank can provide would be limited indeed. None of the examples I saw had even a muzzle cover so I imagine any attempt to load and fire a shell would prove, shall we say, 'problematic'.

I have no interest in post-war Soviet armour but I thought this shot might be of interest to some. Perhaps someone can identify the model from this shot or even provide some background on the history of Soviet military support to Yemen?

Very interesting. I dont know a lot about tanks but it looks like a T34/85.

I thought it might be a bit more modern than that but thanks for the comment.

T-34/85...Probably the most-produced tank ever...encountered wherever low-skilled fighters needed a solid, simple tank....

I think you're right Gunny, as we drove past the first one I whipped my camera out just in time to snap the second one. The guide wouldn't let me get out to inspect closer as it might have attracted official attention but really, there was no-one around and the islanders themselves don't give a rat's a$$.
