That's some bloody wide tracks for a little thing like that ! They'd weigh more than the chassis !

    Strange little thing.......

US or Canadian made B-3 Snowmobile tracked carrier.

I found this on a Russian website:

In this article you will learn about the American track-snow vehicle transporter B-3. These machines were delivered to the USSR under the Lend-Lease program and participated in military operations in the most northern parts of the Soviet-German front.

During the Second World War in service of most armies in the world there are many different types of armored vehicles and special machinery, designed based on them.

By construction, the chassis armored personnel carriers, which were issued during this period, were divided on the wheel, semi-tracked, crawler. Wheeled armored vehicles were used mainly by the U.S. Army, semi most widely in the German and American armies, crawler - in English.

Special track carrier (snowmobile), B-3, enacted in 1944 to adopt the Canadian Army, was produced by the American firm "Forand and Delorn."

The machine is designed to perform reconnaissance and special missions in deep snow and soft ground. If necessary, could be used for transportation (towing) of cargo, towing skiers, and as an ambulance.

The combat weight of the car was about 4.3 tons. The armor protection of a front projection - 14 mm, board - 7 mm, while providing protection of crew members from small-arms fire, shrapnel mines and grenades.

The layout with the classic snowmobile aft engine and transmission arrangement in the center of the machine.

Housing snowmobile frameless, welded from thin rolled sheet with thickness 7-14 mm. The thickness of the bottom 5 mm. The front sheet is attached to the bolt. To increase the stiffness in the lower part of the body has a system of additional bonds bolts.

The crew of the snowmobile was two people - a driver and mechanic vehicle commander (aka gunner-radio operator). Permanent seats to accommodate the landing was not provided. The free internal volume of the machine was 1.56 m at the rate of ³ ³ 0.78 m for each crew member.

Overall dimensions of the conveyor (snowmobile) B-3:
    Length, m 3.95
    Width, m 2.56
Height without the tent, and machine gun, 1.65 m
The size of gauge tracks, 1.66 m
    Length of track, 2.42 m
    Track width, 0.885 m
    Clearance, 0.31 m

Due to the large width of the caterpillar tracks of special design (885 mm), ground pressure was 0,09-0,11 kg / cm ² (about 7 times smaller than that of other tracked vehicles in this class), in conjunction with clearance in the 0.31 m to provide high throughput (the height of the snow Crossing the shaft up to 1.7 meters).

Snowmobile developed a high speed over rough terrain to 13.5 km / h on the highway - up to 48 km / h with a cruising range of up to 190 km on the highway and 100 km of roads. The maximum angle of climb, overcome by the machine was 20 °. The motion was allowed on the slope with the limiting slope of ramp to 20 °. When using the B-3 for hauling cargo load on the hook was 2.75 tons.

    Armament

The main armament was 7.71 mm snowmobile (.303 British) British BREN gun with a range of effective fire in 1510 meters (1600 yards) and the rate of fire of 500 rounds per minute, which is mounted by means of a special bracket on the swivel attached to a carriage that moves on the monorail along the machine frame. The machine gun can be installed as one of the sides of the commander's machine (gunner-radio operator), and on the front page with the driver. Ammunition guns was 360 rounds (12 stores in 30 rounds in each).

Firing the gun with all the seats could be carried out both by ground and air targets.

Subsidiary arms snowmobile was 11.43 mm (.45 ACP) SMG Thompson.

    Engine

On the B-3 was installed petrol engine company Cadillac maximum capacity of 110 horsepower. Engine V-type eight-cylinder, liquid cooled. The angle of the collapse of cylinders - 90 °.

Cylinders and the upper half of the crankcase are made in one casting. Removable cylinder head, attached by bolts of force. The lower half of the crankcase is closed from the bottom tray, which serves as an oil reservoir. The mass of "dry" engine - 270 kg.

Engine lubrication system combined. From the sump with a capacity of 8 liters, the oil under the influence of single-section gear pump is fed under pressure to main and connecting rod crankshaft journals, heads to the upper connecting rod, cam shaft supports and clips guides tappets. Normal pressure oil system - 2.8 kg / cm ².

The main characteristics of the engine Cadillac:
    Taktnost 4
    Number of cylinders 8
    Bore, mm 89
    Stroke, mm 114.5
    Displacement, l
    one cylinder 0.71
    the whole engine 5.7
    Compression ratio 6.5
The average fuel pressure, kg / cm ² 5,1
    Gasoline octane 80

Engine cooling system with forced circulation of liquid. System Capacity - 24 liters. The circulation of the coolant (water) was provided by the centrifugal pump. The radiator is located at the rear car.
Total petrol fuel capacity - 200 liters. There are two fuel tanks. Carburetor Dual downdraft, the air damper is connected with a thermostat that automatically regulates suction depending on the ambient temperature. Air cleaner oil bath and wire gasket. Starting the engine was carried out using an electric starter.

Motor, fluid coupling and a planetary gearbox in one unit interlocked and fastened on three pillars. In front of the engine through the two legs rubber pads supported on brackets welded to the housing board sheets. At the rear of the unit has a single point of support through the rubber pad to the bracket that is welded to the bottom of the hull snowmobile. All units provide support freedom of the elastic displacement, mainly in the vertical plane and the axis of the crankshaft.

Transmission "Cadillac" with hydro-automatic transmission with hydraulic clutch switch. Balance-spring suspension. Transmission - with automatic planetary transmission.

The absence of the final drive has necessitated a significant increase in axle ratio (5.83). The transfer between the main clutch and gearbox hard, which is typical for systems which have transmission assemblies are placed sequentially, as in this case the transmission housing most appropriate to rigidly mounted to the engine. Between the gearbox and differential driveline. The range of transmission ratios snowmobile B-3 - 3,26 However, the presence of a high specific power (26.2 hp. / Ton). Possible to obtain sufficient traction quality machine. Efficiency of the machine with the lowest transmission was 0.85, with top gear - 0.347. Transmission was high enough range of gear ratios, provides the necessary change in traction when driving in various road conditions.

The main gear is made in the form of a pair of bevel gears with spiral teeth.

Rotation mechanism - double cylindrical differentials. Turn the machine freezes implemented by one of the tracks (lockup of the respective brake drum double differential), without the full braking. Full stop tracks going at the same time inhibition of the two brake drums. Drum brakes are enclosed in the casing of the differential and working in the oil.
Automatic drive transmission control hydraulic type is similar in design drive the car "Cadillac" and M5-A1 tank, M24.

The mass units of power plant, transmission and chassis of the machine is 42% by weight of the entire machine.

Chassis B-3 is designed to ensure a high rate of cross-over snow and soft ground.

The location of the driving wheel in the caterpillar drive forward. The design feature of the chassis is the lack of a snowmobile guide wheel. Track tension adjustment by moving the rear bogie.

Each track consists of three rubber bands - belts with zavulkanizirovannym within the cord. The mid band is wide, the extreme of the same width - narrow. The ends of the strip are connected to the central metal plates that are bolted to the outer side of each band. The concave side plates form a treadmill for the rollers. On the outer side of the concave parts of the lining in the U-shaped recesses privulkanizirovany rubber pads. Connecting the ends of track tapes was carried out with a hinged device consisting of a finger, installed in the ears, bolted to the ends of the track belt and earrings.

The disadvantage of this design track tape was that during the operation is pulling track, resulting in broken her engagement with the drive wheel.

The drive wheels are mounted on a snowmobile housings axes. Each drive wheel has a 4 star, consisting of a ring gear, which is attached to one side of a conical ring, the other in front of each tooth was attached by three bolts plate-shaped corner. By replacing the parts restored step driving wheel. The design included the possibility of replacing the sprocket without dismantling of the drive wheel.

In order to avoid wet snow sticking to the outer surfaces of the drive wheel hub privulkanizirovan thin layer of rubber.

Snowmobile Suspension consists of four bogies (two on each side), two pairs of rollers each. Front and rear bogie are arranged essentially the same.

Trolleys are composed of two welded balance beams, which were installed on the transverse axis (pipes) laid down in the machine. And the pipes are fixed stationary front bogie and rear bogie pipe with screws capable of moving 100 mm along the longitudinal axis of the machine, and thus a necessary tension track tapes. The disadvantage of this design is skewed trucks, in the case of varying length, right and left crawler belts, which makes the rotation of rollers, and in some cases can lead to decay of the caterpillars.

Balancers are mounted on the hinge axis, the bearings, and are not limited progress in relation to the body in the vertical plane. There are restrictions on the movement of balances to each other. To avoid tipping trucks inside rocker bogie interconnected spring device consisting of a piston rod with a spring.

Snowmobile track rollers with pneumatic tires. On each rocker on a common axis uses two rollers of the same design.

All joints have individual chassis lubrication points and sealed with rubber rings or seals featuring self.

A characteristic feature of the design of the chassis snowmobile is widely used welding parts, in combination with a relatively light pneumatic tire and wheel bearing rails provides a significant reduction in the relative weight of the chassis.

Overall design concepts embodied by "Forand and Delorn" in a special conveyor (snowmobile) B-3 has successfully allowed to use it in areas with deep snow cover. Limited snowmobile party was staged in the Soviet Union for use in the northern regions, but the main type of equipment used by the Soviet Army in the Far North, there were snowmobiles.

Some form of specialised armoured snow tractor-would be Soviet as they had the greatest experience/need for such a thing (although of course other forces worked on high mobility kit like the Weasel).
