    The 4 is simply a factory inspectors mark. The inspectors were each given a different number and they can be found from 0 to 9.

    Hi Dal..welcome to the forum..Wagriff is correct that the number stamping is for a QC Inspector. These numbers appear sporadically on the lower guards..so its not necessary to see all the time..with this producer. Also this is the only producer who practiced this QC stamping..and is not seen on any mid to late period daggers unless the dagger was fitted for production quota or was parted together at the end of the war..or just recently.
    I can see that your dagger has the recessed guard to accommodate the blade shoulders to fit snuggly. Can you shoot more photos and show the rest of the dagger? Regards Larry
