Cleaning of relic in forrest camp

Ok....had a go at the ol' electrolysis.

I found a mills striker arm a few weeks back and daren't use my normal method of 'smacking it with a hammer until the rust gives up and falls off' as it would have destroyed the relic

So, made up a simple salt solution, connected 4 9volters in series and away we went. It was a little bit Heath Robinson as I don't own a soldering iron so I had to 'wrap and stick'

Must say I was pleased with the result. It didn't clear all the rust but certainly moved a lot of it and made the rest fragile enough for me to nibble off with a pair of mini wire cutters.

PS Last picture is the before shot. You can't see it too well from this picture but the arm was twice as thick and only just recognisable. After electrolysis it was normal thickness and totally recognisable.

U could better use a battery charger for a carbattery.
They have more power and have a failsave if something goes wrong.
I use a battery charger for a carbattery and it's great!
Btw the positive is connected to a piece of iron the best thins is iron as pure as
possible because this will take the rust from the object.
U could use salt but i prefer soda. To much isn't good because it will incriese the "flow" through the water.
For the people that are new with electrolysis, do mind the gasses that occur
during this proces. These gasses are explosive if they stay in a closed area like a little room, garage etc.

well... i have a drawing but it's in Dutch but i will translate it for u

Voorwerp = The object u want to clean
The + is connected to a piece of iron (no steel etc.)
The blue stuff is water with a little bit of soda in it this will increase the flow of electricity trough the water.
The box shown on top of the drawing is the Batterycharger.
I use a 12v charger from Absaar but i don't know if u can get hold of one.
About 10 grams of salt or soda per liter is enough to much and your failsave will die (to much electricity running through the water)

ps. do keep an eye on the proces it has to fizzle a little bit and soaking to long can damage the item.

The metal pins that go's into the water that the + is conected to, there is 4 in your bucket right? they are all conected together to the +?

My basic set up, and before and after photos of 'cleaned' mag.
I'm using a water and salt solution with 18.5 volts from a laptop charger.

Yes there are 4 metal pins in the bucket.
All 4 of them are connected by a wire to the + pole.
It's easier for the rust to settle on 4 objects rather than 1.
I hope u understand what i mean.

no problem
This is a great way to clean artifacts found with a metall detector.
The rust just goes away and after drying you could treat it with a bio-oil.
This will prefent it from rusting again.
