    Nah, it's a Matilda. You can see the side panels covering the wheels on the right hand side. The turret is all wrong for a Cromwell and the central drivers position is Matilda.

    Wouldn't worry mate, looks live to me. The filler plug is in place as is, according to the finder's statement, the base plug. Not one you would want to take home.

    On a plus point, now you know...

    In your previous post, the cap is for a No 151 or 161 fuze used on the 2 inch mortars. The 3 inch safety cap was for a No. 152 fuze which is much smaller than the 151 or 161.

    LOL! That's how I find a quarter of my sites Stuart.........random conversations!

    The best way of telling if a 20mm projectile is HE is by the brass nose cap. No brass nose cap, usually safe. I...

    Are you referring to the shiney brass cartridge in the last couple of photos as a 20mm? If you are, it isn't, it's a 50cal, but apologies if you weren't as I can see a 20 in your other picture :)

    Yeah, the markings are a bit over the top aren't they. Still, at least it has a date :)

    check you 2lber shells very carefully. Some had markings embossed into the body of the shell :)

    A nice collection of finds. Can't see a 2inch mortar safety cap though. Do you mean a 2lber base safety cover?

    If you are getting 20mm AP, there will be 20mm HE around as well. Watch out for them...

    Defo a 50cal then :)

    As for your blanks, they are indeed just that.

    MH = Small Arms Ammunition Factory No 3, Hendon, AUSTRALIA
    44 = Year of manufacture
    L = Blank
    V = Mark five

    :)

    The LC 42 stamp is very very clear and the blast cap looks more like a 50cal than a 30cal. With such a close up picture it is difficult to be sure, but I think it's a 50, not a 30.

    As M3 says, the...

    As m3 has pointed out, your 9mm is actually a .380, as the cartridge is rimmed. The cartridge stuffed into your 303 looks like that is a 9mm as it appears to be rimless :)

    Your 25lbers are called...

    That is indeed a No 36m filler plug, and your 2lber transport safety cover is very nice too. Nice Kolynos toothpaste tube as well. Funnily enough, they actually still make this stuff :) :)

    Your safety cap (the thing with 3 arms), looks to be for 2lber shell. The two caps in the last two pictures........the one with the knurled edge looks suspiciously like the cap off a Lee-Enfield oil...

    I am sure you will have seen the threads regarding the 'dump' digging myself and the RRPG do on a regular basis. If you can find the base dump, your finds will increase dramatically. If you can find...
  16. Re: Australian WWII - Far North Queensland Metal detecting and recovery

    It happens to the best of us. A few years back I was positive I had found a Browning water cooled MG until I uncovered all of the water jacket......turned out to be a drainpipe, and the thing I...
  17. Re: Australian WWII - Far North Queensland Metal detecting and recovery

    In amongst the live ordnance could well be some very nice drill stuff. Worth a look in my opinion, just dig carefully ! Start 6 inches behind where the detection starts, dig down 8-12inches, then...
  18. Re: Australian WWII - Far North Queensland Metal detecting and recovery

    Your No 36m appears to be without a base plug. This could mean that it is just an empty shell and therefore safe, or just missing the base plug and fuze yet still full of explosive, and not safe. If...
  19. Re: Australian WWII - Far North Queensland Metal detecting and recovery

    Hey Sweep :)

    I've taken a picture of one of my 2lber cap protectors for you, in situ on a 2lber case so you can see exactly how it was used. Hope you find it useful.

    As for your site, it goes...
  20. Re: Australian WWII - Far North Queensland Metal detecting and recovery

    Nice little haul :) I would have to assume that the camp had a firing range nearby, (95% of them did), which would be the best place for you to search. Have a look at the terrain and see if there are...
  21. Re: Australian WWII - Far North Queensland Metal detecting and recovery

    I was down the carboot flogging crap out of the garage, (£146 :) ), and initially saw this on my tiny phone screen, in glaring sunlight. Obvious on a big screen :)

    That's my excuse anyway :)
  22. Re: Australian WWII - Far North Queensland Metal detecting and recovery

    I can't tell exactly from your picture but the mortar is one of three things. Practice, smoke or para illum. Can you take a pic of the top please.

    Your safety cap is indeed from a 162 fuze, used...
