I can't tell about the helmet but i am sure the star is a 1990's reproduction. That is not a bad thing as they themselves are very hard/impossible to find. I have had a few of them and they are not...
Doug i am aware that dug helmets are a totally different matter. I have close to no experience in the decal field but i am pretty good at spotting fake dug helmets even i have no knowledge on decals...

It would be nice with pics in higher resolution instead of one big "group" pic :) The stitching of the white disc should be quite uneven. Maybe why you ask if it's home made? I had a few of these and...
No problem:) If you want to remove rust use acetone and automatic transmission oil at a 50/50 mix rate. This will remove everything:) Take care with these things!

No. The detonator itself have been removed. That is why you can see threading on the device. However there's a black powder charge in the top part.

No it's not safe :) It looks like the detonator itself have been removed but there is a black powder charge inside this part. ALWAYS treat such objects a Not Safe!

All i can help with is that i know the Germans used a yellow primer on vehicles and other things. Maybe they also used this primer on some helmets?
