Yes definitely a POW. Unfortunately Wood is a common name in the UK especially hard to research with only an initial E and not a full name.
He does appear in the UK Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls, 1793-1949 on Ancestry.

Prompted by a question about a KM S98/05 bayonet frog on another forum, I found this photograph from 1936 which may be of interest.
The sailing ship Horst Wessel was launched 13 June 1936....
I think that is a scarce unit marking.
Many of these can be found with unit markings for German Colonial troops.
