A "coal scuttle" is a nickname for a German helmet ( both wars ) because they look like a coal scoop and a magpie is a bird that collects odd things for its nesting materials......

And I think this settles it...... a "commemoration helmet " from the late 1940's is a very plausible answer done 'before endeavours fade'.

This is that ND42 with the paint "wash"

Some M42s were barely painted at all David - this one of mine is very thin and another ND42 I have is "almost" one of those disputed 'dicromate wash' ones I have heard about, scarcely painted at all....

So it looks like it originally had the FULL red/white band around the whole helmet, then over-painted and the smaller flash put on ......why?
