And I think this settles it...... a "commemoration helmet " from the late 1940's is a very plausible answer done 'before endeavours fade'.

Some M42s were barely painted at all David - this one of mine is very thin and another ND42 I have is "almost" one of those disputed 'dicromate wash' ones I have heard about, scarcely painted at all....
