Cleaning Ersatz felt pickelhaube Preussen 1895 model with chinstrap

Hi everyone,

After years of hunting for felt ersatz pickelhaubes, I found another example. Time did leave it's traces. It's dented and fell pray to moths and mice. But still looks stunning IMO.

I have a question is about the chinstrap. I did not came with the helmet. I have seen that these were used on the 1915 model but never saw evidence that these were used on the 1914 model. The linen I used is not original; the metal parts are.

Previous owners did some restoration work on the moth holes a long time ago. Also the brass is polished and left traces on the felt. Can this be cleaned without damaging the felt? I will also replace the not original counter plate on the inside of the dome with an original one.

I like to have your opinion.

It is always risky trying to remove stains, but the residual polish marks on the felt should be fairly powdery and might lift off with a gentle brushing with a soft tooth brush.

Thanks for the advise. I tried it but the stains are old and I can remove them.

I'll just leave them for the time being.
