Alfred Gustav Christian Roloff (* March 19, 1879 in Lassan; † December 7 or December 19, 1951 in Rade b. Rendsburg) was a German painter and illustrator. He was best known for his covers for penny dreadfuls and for his dynamic paintings of horses, for which he was nicknamed "Horse Roloff".

Life and work




Alfred Roloff was born to Wilhelm Roloff (1850-1936), a naval officer, and Caroline Roloff, née Sadewasser (1855-1924) in Lassan, a farming town near Usedom on the Achterwasser. In 1886 the family moved to Hamburg. In 1896 he went to the Berlin Art Academy, from which he graduated in 1901 at the age of twenty-two. At the same time, he embarked on a busy career as an illustrator, largely supported by his then house publisher Verlagshaus für Volksliteratur und Kunst in Berlin - a book publishing house that was flooding the European market at the time with entertainment and light novels.

His talent was quickly discovered by other publishers and gallery owners. Against the background of mass production, Roloff gradually became a sought-after and successful illustrator. In 1905, he was a participant in the competition for advertising designs for joint advertising by Ludwig Stollwerck and Otto Henkell. His design was recommended by the judges for purchase for 200 M.[4] He designed title covers with print runs in the millions.

During the period of the Nazi dictatorship, he was a member of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts and thus found artistic recognition among the National Socialists. He was able to exhibit in Berlin; from 1940 to 1944 he was represented with nine paintings in the Great German Art Exhibitions at the Haus der Deutschen Kunst in Munich.[5] His painting Flüchtende Pferde (Fleeing Horses), a large-scale work, hung in Hitler's study in the New Reich Chancellery.[6] Alfred Rosenberg was enthusiastic about his "Fohlenenzwillinge" (Foal Twins).[7] He had lived in Berlin-Friedenau since 1916 and moved to the Warthegau in 1943, which he left in the spring of 1945.

After World War II, Alfred Roloff lived in seclusion in Rade near Rendsburg until his death in 1951.

Alfred Roloff is best known for his paintings of horses, for which he was nicknamed Horse Roloff. In addition to animal portraits in general and battle and war depictions (especially from the First World War), the horse is the preferred subject of his artistic work. In particular, horses in motion, such as fleeing from thunderstorms, storms or fire, and the backdrop of an eruptively charged nature are frequently recurring motivic elements. He is considered a traditionalist who acquired a unique plastic-realistic technique through studies based on nature.

A very nice painting. I don't see any obvious signs of damage and personally I would get it framed and enjoy it. If it does require attention please make sure it is done professionally as it would be a pity to damage such an original artwork.

We currently do not plan to restore the beautiful painting of infantry patrol with mg 1934 by Alfred Gustav Christian Roloff 1879 -1951. It is only an option for a prospective buyer. I absolutely agree with you that otherwise, the painting would lose its patina and period charm if it were restored.
