    Hello everyone,

Here is a late war style Wehrpass to NCO Heinrich Eckey, Iron Cross 1st class and Close Combat Clasp in Bronze recipient.

Born 1925, He joined the Army in 1942 as a volunteer candidate NCO and was trained October 1942 - October 1943 at Army NCO schools in Eutin and Ettlingen. November 1943 he was transferred to Gren.Rgt.166 of the 82.Inf.Div then operating in Russia (Kiew, Tscherkassy).
In the Tscherkassy and ‘Hube’ pockets the Division was decimated (less then a regiment remained) and renamed Div.Gruppe.82 and was attached to the 254.Inf.Div, which was also active in the east (Tarnopol and Carpathians). Div.Gruppe.82 was disbanded in October 1944.
Heinrich Eckey took part in and survived without an injury no less than 22 confirmed close combat days from 8/3/44 till 14/4/44.
This combat must have taken a toll on him as he failed to return from leave in November 1944 as mentioned in a covering letter sent 27/3/45 by his unit to the Coesfeld Military Recruiting Dept.

    Kind regards,

    Will

Very interesting and nice Wehrpass. So looks like he went AWOL?
"Please", Thank You" and proper manners appreciated

Possible suicide from PTSD ? Very sad if that happened, from his decorations he was a brave
    front-line soldier.

Very interesting! Thanks for posting. One minor point, his division was not one of those encircled in the Korsun - Cherkassy pocket, although close by. They were in the Hube/Podolsk Kessel just a couple months later as you mentioned, however.

To have survived 22 close combat days without being wounded is quite an achievement. However, him going AWOL hints at mental wounds which would be hard to avoid after all he'd seen. I love the Sturm and Nahkampftage tally paperwork. Those are always great to have.

It does appear that he failed to return from leave so was AWOL, unfortunately the Wehrpass and other documents don’t contain any extra information on this.
The only non military document is a typed sheet of song lyrics dated 31.10.46. The song is called Capri Fisher, released in 1943 and was written by Gerhard Winkler.
