    Hello
This buckle is a good Assmann alu buckle, it is true that looks to be marked 166 but this is impossible , the Assmann number is 155, and I think that this is simply an optical illusion, shadow....
    Good pics are needed
    Regards

Well, if you were going to buy it at a good price for a 155/39 then why not, if it turns out IS a 166/39 then you're on a winner...

Would have been great Kris if it had been a 166, it would have ignited the buckle collectors world lol

I wouldn't worry about it, you're better checking these things out. Unknown buckles, or any item of militaria still turn up. There's so much we don't know about things, you could stumble across something unknown. Anyway, you getting the buckle?

There are a lot of SS buckles that were unknown to the collecting community until the internet and forums. The RZM 36/43 SS and RZM 36/44 SS steel are examples. There is one example of an SS buckle marked RZM M4/27. It looks more like the markings on a HJ buckle. JP says the rarest steel SS buckle has the OLC diamond. Marc V says he a seen a Bakelite SS buckle, in a European collection. I am sure there are some other variations out there.
