Allegedly the grandson seems to think the buckle came from a member of the SS that was in a pile of burning bodies.....I honestly don't think that's the truth though....the rest of the story definitely seemed made up or stretched to say the least. His Grandfather (the vet that brought the buckle back) was definitely in the war, stationed in France in 1944. Although some of the stories are of undercover secret agent james bond type of missions and while not impossible does not sound likely.
The vet's army serial number is 39592740, he did show me proof of that. I did find this Pierce M Mayo : U.S. Army Enlistment Record
