As Kris says, it is a bad sign when the rust won't at least flake off
in small particles if it's as heavily caked as you say.
I suppose they can also cover up or obscure specific surface
areas which give it away as a fake as well.........!

Chemicals can do wonders, good and bad. This buckle may be too far gone to tell if it's authentic. A pity really.

I once became a very odd result, just accidently, when trying to make a mould of a simple but well nicely formed bowl.
The bowl form i used was styrene monomer foam that reacted on the contact of the product I used. It gave a stange result of a pitted surface.
I 'll post a pic if I happen to find it.When one would mould that result and apply it on any item it would give you the image of a something that has sufferd dammages by natural rusting...
