That is a bad sign! Usualy those things deteriorate when handling them. Is there any smell to it?

    Hi, Ben

I will take some better pics of the pins. The rust is caked so thick that it must've sat in the ground for a very long time. I guess fakers could leave it in the ground for long periods but this would be their best work then! I will post pics tomorrow.

Green they can do alot it with acid and leave it in the ground for a very short time!!!

As Kris says, it is a bad sign when the rust won't at least flake off
in small particles if it's as heavily caked as you say.

I suppose they can also cover up or obscure specific surface
areas which give it away as a fake as well.........!

    Good point Ben

Chemicals can do wonders, good and bad. This buckle may be too far gone to tell if it's authentic. A pity really.

It will flake slightly but the rust will not come off by hand alone. I have nothing to lose, will clean it tomorrow and take a few pics to show again. Believe me, I'd rather collect nicer conditioned items, this was an antique shop find and thought it could accent the display.

I once became a very odd result, just accidently, when trying to make a mould of a simple but well nicely formed bowl.
The bowl form i used was styrene monomer foam that reacted on the contact of the product I used. It gave a stange result of a pitted surface.
I 'll post a pic if I happen to find it.When one would mould that result and apply it on any item it would give you the image of a something that has sufferd dammages by natural rusting...
