The poor quality engraving and the strange bull nosed end of the scabbard condemns this for me.

Follow the link, its a reputable auction house. They have a lot of daggers on offer here, if they are all bad someones going to get burn't.

Are the grooves or slots on the hand guard normally deeper on period daggers?
That SS dagger isn't the only bad piece in this auction sale. Did you see the H.Mayer SS Honor ring there as well? The name "H. Mayer" is a Very common one that is seen on the fakes. Little wonder that they are starting it out at £60. Or the M40 with brand new paint and decals for £200. And it goes on and on. All sorts of marvelous Good pieces in there and a whole Load of Bad ones as well. If you'll note, at the bottom of each description they handily absolve themselves of all responsibility if you get a questionable item. "As Is" means just that-As IS. William
