Both are fine. Each makers template will be slightly different.

That makers used different acid resistant masks (templates) I think is a given, and for some smaller makers the work may have even been subcontracted. With what I am seeing in the images what seems to be one blade that perhaps was cleaned a little too vigorously, which removed the gray "frosted" appearance that was the normal result of the acid removing steel to create the lettering. With the dark etch a result of a two step process that darkened the interiors of the lettering. I've seen etches where inattention to the process has caused areas which perhaps could be described as "pimples". But with the dark etch of the second example I'm still trying to figure why it looks the way it does (which does not seem to be typical), needing an even closer look to see what may have caused it. And perhaps some more details about the dagger itself, because the etching does seem to be a little smaller and the spine a little sharper (in the images), which would make me want to look at the dagger more closely. Yorksman, Adrian Stevenson-One of the Forum Administrators, LarryC-the Dagger Forum Moderator, Paul Hogle- a Forum Sponsor from Lakesidetrader who is one of the worlds leading dagger sellers and specialists, as well as myself and several others have told you that this font is a known and normal font and yet you still worry about the font.... Frankly, I don't know what more you're looking to hear or want to hear. If you are This worried about it that the opinions and evaluations of some of the worlds leading dagger experts aren't enough, then I don't know how to help you.

William, Apparently there is, or has been another discussion that has taken place. Just so there is no misunderstanding, it's the gray areas inside the etching that I was commenting on. Best regards, Fred

When I hear the word "Font",, I immediately perceive it as the shape and style of the lettering,,, so there is no misunderstanding,,,maybe a question should be asked to member "Yorksman",,if his concern is with the blackening in the etch or the less of it.....OR...The lettering style itself. As now some of us are replying to font style and Fred is answering to a Blackening in the etch. Both are good answers,,,but for Yorksman,, we need to know what exactly your concerns are. Is it the style of lettering or the blackening in the etch. Regards Larry

Larry, We are in agreement that Fonts" generally mean the shape and style of lettering, and I was pretty much done with this topic having stated my initial observation. But then I looked at the image again, and if "Yorksman" can answer it, I have a new question that goes beyond fonts and the how they were etched. Where the green arrows are pointing - is that a fissure in the blade?? Starting after the "h", and exiting somewhere to the right of the "e".
    Best regards, Fred

I see what your saying Fred,,as that fishure line extends into the word "Meine' in the first few photos. Is it a fissure or is it a reflection, that a High ridge seems to capture in photos of something dark in the back ground. Turning the blade one way to the other sometimes captures a Line type image. Hard call on this one. Good eyes!!

Larry, Yes that could be some kind of reflection or optical illusion, but I thought that I would mention it. With that said, I'm fairly certain that those gray splotches inside the lettering are not optical illusions. But what they are I dont't know, and nothing has come to mind at the moment. Best regards, Fred
