The crossguards look to be solid nickel but the scabbard fittings and chain look plated to me. This is a fairly common configuration for a type I chained SS. The markings on the rear of the chain look a bit "slack" but the dagger itself, and the fittings look fine. The blade looks worn somewhat

In better times, more than that. High end items are sticking at the moment

I am definetly a novice at this but from everything I've read about this type dagger, most of these 1936 models did not have a makers mark. The chain assembly has the DRGM stamp clearly visible under the open part of the clover, and the deep SS stamp on the backside of the second link, typical of the type 1 chain. What do you mean by the patina under the portapee? I can post better pictures if you like.

It should have a visible line where the knot has been, if it has been there a long time, like a tide mark in the bath.............. Not that I leave one

And I speak for everybody when i say, although this is a nice original dagger, It's probably something you never wanted to inherit, sorry for your loss

my dad did not have the portapee tied to the dagger. He just had it attached to the chain. I tied it myself after seeing pictures. When I was a kid (i'm 45 now) he had the dagger hanging on the wall on a nail in the living room. For the past 10 years or so its been sitting in his gun safe.

Hi and welcome to the fourm.

Very sorry to hear of your loss. My condolences to you and your family.

The dagger is a very nice example!

    Cheers, Ade.
