I don't think there is much hope for those decals. What's the rest of the helmet look like?

The helmet is just a WW1 shell which has some rust which has been overpainted black, as shown, and the internal posts for the original chinstrap removed from the inside.

Maybe a candidate for restoration ? At least the decals
and newer paint could be stripped off.

I agree,as it was free i would turn it upside down and make it into a waste paper basket,it will look good beside the office desk,but i would not try to "restore"it.A lot of effort for what in the end will always be a ruined original helmet.
