I don't think the decal is Quist as my friend Doug states.

The runes do seem to sit below the break but the break seems more EF like.

Also not sure if they are "1st" pattern or "2nd" pattern runes.

That's the difficulty with these relic shells , in any case if the originality is in doubt this shell is not worth 300-500$ as the above poster states. Even if proven original that would seem like a lot of money for its condition.

Cannot say anything about the decal because I simply don't know them well.
the lid appears genuinely battle damaged, but I have the feeling that it may be coming from a different front, much colder, considering the good conservation (well, for a dug item).
It is not unusual that dealer in Normandy buy stuff to re-sell. If you just count how many tourists visit Normandy every year , all wanting a small souvenir to bring back, and this is going on since many years...
However, for 20 I would have bought it too!

Almost postive it is "1st pattern" Q, remember the CG helmet? Similar break pattern hidden/deformed by rust bubbles. Either way, as you say this shell wont be long for this world and value is really hard to determine as is the style of SS decal. A small leap of faith is warranted on these I think unless you have the shovel in your hand and the dirt is on your boots.
