Agree, sadly cut chin strap is more commonly associated with it being removed from a corpse. Helmets were discarded by prisoners along with bayonets and equipment other than feldflasche and meat can, kochgeschirr.
Out of interest, is the Lot number readable inside the helmet?
Chin straps were cut by the Sani's when dealing with wounded men as well so it's always difficult to say a Helmet is from a KIA without other evidence.
