I would assume it probably is original, but the decal is so corroded that it would be near impossible to tell without an in hand inspection.

I say to myself, "it's got to be original, who would go this far to fake something like this"..........but then I think...."if there is money to be made a faker would do anything"

Hi, I am guessing by what is left of the decal that this is an ET type decal on either an M40 or M42. Only the ET decal has that "soft break" to the shield (if original). Personally I would chance it as being original as I would have thought the shell would have been worth more in better condition before being re-buried with a fake decal to deteriorate even further.
