Here's an interesting SS M40 from my SS collection that I picked up from Dave Shirlin. Some of you might be familiar with this helmet as it came out Bryan's (Foamspoon) collection. Its an SS M40 Q66 with a unique lot number C407. Its the only known Quist helmet with a "C" prefix. It retains most of its factory rough textured finish medium grey paint and in great condition, but my poor photography does not do this helmet any justice. It bears the factory applied non-lacquered "fat Q" pattern SS decal. Liner system is an M31 steel liner band dated 1942 with its original strap. Overall a favorite of mine, and one that will remain in my collection. Thank's for looking, gents.

I can see why it's a favourite of yours Samir, that is a beautiful helmet! Is that lot number "double stamped" or is it just the lighting on the photo?Very interesting piece. Leon.

Hi Leon, not the lighting. I was told it was a good, heavy strike.

Beautiful helmet Samir, I remember you showing me this one earlier, its looks great in these new pictures.

Judging from the lot number and the 1942 dated liner band, I would assume this helmet is from one of the last batches of Quist Decaled M40's (SS helmets after 1943 were "no decals").

It is not unusual to see a '0' in front of Quist M40 three digit lot numbers. 0219, 0395, 0435, 0436, 0782.

The 'C' is the same shape as the 0 but with a missing section, probably just a broken zero stamping die.

A lot number of 0407 would be in line with these other examples. Given the choice between a super-rare prefix of which there is only one known example or a mis-stamp, statistically, it is probably a mis-stamp.
