SS Steel Helmet Real or Fake
just got this one today and dont know if real or not, looks like ther is paint over the helmet and the decals, the seller told me the helmet was cleand with oxalicacid and than overpaintet to preserve around 10 years ago, on one of the pictures you can see the transparent color can be removed easy.

what can it be, is the shell it self good

I'm sure the shell is real - I'm not sure what type; I'm no expert. But most likely the paint, the lacquer finish, and the SS decal are definitely post war added.

hi, i would return it if you can. paint , decals damage and wear nothing rings true . . bummer mate ,but if we are all honest with ourselves we have all been in the same position at some stage as collectors . cheers paul .

Too true. The best thing to do when wanting to buy a piece from a specific area (say, helmets, tunics, badges, etc.) you should search for it on this forum as well as other ones, and get all the info you can, then go out and look for the piece you want. Unfortunately, there are just too many fakes nowadays, and the chances of getting screwed over are very high.

I was thinking that too. The ear guards are angled downward compared to the visor portion, and the visor portion also looks strangely shaped.
