This one has potential. I am leaning towards a good ET pattern SS decal that was heavily scrubbed.

I second that. Always best to try and get the best possible piece you can, even if it means shelling out a bit extra. False economy doing otherwise

I can't imagine anyone legitimately wishing to remove a decal 'failing' to do so. It's not that difficult! Even picking up a pebble and 'aving at 'er' will succeed. IMO the vast majority of 'poorly defaced decals' are merely attempts to deceive.
Better, close up pictures of this lid would certainly help but I see no evidence of postwar paint explaining the scrubbed decal. In fact, the only area of savage scrubbing is in the decal location. I would put my money on this being a standard M40 with a bodgied-up fake SS decal slapped on in the hope of fooling the unwary.
Depends on what they used to deface it, the only reason I think the decal is good is because the white paint looks right and it does look like it was scrubbed with either steel wool or something similar. Just my thoughts
