Though, I have to say, sometimes I can't understand how other people *aren't* more fascinated by these strange relics of the weirdest thing that's happened in Western Culture in 1,000 years. How the nihilistic weak-chinned eternal poseur pictured above with the emblem of Saint Danziger upon his cap, (who allowed another man to be his conscience and ran around Europe consulting the Bhagavad Gita and running a private, political, multi-national army of enthusiastic volunteers bent on the destruction of the Soviet Union, which was itself loosely based on a philosophy born in Heini's home country) would end up terrorizing the distant relatives of the beloved figure of my childhood (pictured above in mock stage horror) because he believed that another man believed it was the correct, and Historically proper thing to do. If you had prophesied in 1920 that this man, Clubfooted Joey G., a fat, drug addicted war hero with a lust for medals and a narcissistic Austrian with a bad temper and a genius for manipulation would briefly take over a large and important part of the world and engulf Europe in the 1920's version of Dungeons and Dragon symbols, you would have been locked up. I find that so amazing. My favorite professor used to say that the Nazi's are "pornography for intellectuals". Conquest, Death, previously unknown horrors, Wagner, the best uniforms, what's not to be fascinated by?

Hence, me staying in on a Friday night and looking at dead objects from blasted and destroyed regimes instead of mindless beer drinking with "normal" people.

Well done, colleague Doomstown. Pleasing. The actor who played Pee Wee Herman had a rough spot of luck, I guess. Children's television is that way, especially in the U.S. Your thoughts and picture essay are pleasing. Beware of mentioning professors in these posts, though, since such things irritate some locals here, who wear their hearts on their sleeve about things. But we all find the past very compelling and such is why I share from my fundus of pictures and things for your edification. In an earlier time, I would have wanted same, but all I had was a research library at a leading university.

My apologies. The above quote of my professor bereft of context could seem to be disrespectful to the subject matter, when in fact it was a light-hearted jab at himself and his dedicated students who were all hopelessly enthralled by such an enthralling historical subject matter . This professor taught a class on "Nazi Culture" with the primary text being George Mosse's "Nazi Culture: Intellectual, Cultural and Social Life in the Third Reich", a work that uses primary period sources, and one which I'm sure needs no introduction to yourself. Along with Peter Gay, Mr. Mosse has taught me a great deal about the Third Reich, and I probably would never have had anything deeper than a "sculls" level appreciation for the historical context of such objects were it not for my favorite, flippant professor. I love to see photos of the black, skull-bearing objects in your keep, but more often I appreciate your insistence on the usage of the proper German terms and names for such objects and the primacy of period documents over gunshow rumors and wive's tales. To that end, you'll be pleased to know that my interest in the Krim Shield has prompted the purchase of a period text entitled "Wir Erobern Die Krim", written by and for the Soldaten who served in that campaign. I'm also eying a hefty text on the Heer dated 1941.
