    Default Death Head Pin

Hello all ~ The pin pictured below (along with a very nice Walther 7.65 caliber pistol) was purchased recently from a good friend of mine. He received this pin and many other WW II relics from a close friend of his that has recently passed away. His father served as a 1st Lt. in the U.S. 3rd Army, 4th Armored Division, bronze star, brought them home from the WW II ETA which were both taken from a dead German officer in the field.

My question to the forum is this ~ These pins confuse the heck out of me with all the different variations, units, etc. I was told this particular pin was in all likelyhood a SS Panzer insignia. I was also told it may be an early style SS pin without the lower jaw. I'm not much of a photographer so I wasn't able to get a picture of what seems to be a maker mark on the reverse of the pin. So, can anyone here tell me without a doubt what "organizational unit" this type of pin was worn by? Thanks in advance.

    Nice example.

Here is one from my collection on the collar tab. There are also many variants of the basic design of the skull.

    Cheers, Ade.
