Fake Skull on Black SS Cap

Article about: I was browsing a reputable WWII German militaria site, and I stumbled upon a cap that is listed as an Allgemeine-SS enlisted man's visor cap. The description states that the cap has "th

I think, you will also be a good "savants scull"

The "scull savant" can raise the level of inquiry here in the break out from the circular citation of gun show old wives' tales and unfounded legends and myths, and provide the collector community with substantial evidence from primary sources. Until such happens, you can be very certain that I will call your attention to this extraordinary lack of any concrete evidence for any kind of historical generalization.

We have many others here who are fine researchers, who adhere to high standards of inquiry and who assiduously avoid misleading people with digital babble.

You can see in these threads I cite above that there is much added value through inquiry and the addition of primary sources to explain a confusing item.

I write this in the knowledge that the proprietors here share this adherence to sound study versus the clap trap that especially adheres to these SS cap badges.

Give the collector community tangible, useful and original sources that enable the better understanding of these items.
FB -- Pardon my confusion, but were your comments directed toward me?

Given that I don't have access to original German documents for these specific skull badges (if they existed within the collector community, I'm fairly certain they would be up on this forum in a sticky thread by now), and that people who create fakes do not provide documentation stating that their badges are fake, the only thing I can do is build on the knowledge that has been discussed on this forum. In this case, I provided a picture of the skull that was on the cap, as well as a picture of a known fake that has been declared by countless collectors as being inauthentic. The two skulls are absolutely identical in appearance, while the skull on the cap is not identical to any known authentic skull, and there is really no way for me to provide any more "concrete" evidence than that... I was simply pointing out the presence of another fake so that people could become more familiar with the reproductions out there. In other words, I was only trying to help the community, not mislead them with "old wive's tales." I should also note that the dealer responded to me and told me that my original assessment was absolutely correct, and that he has since re-worded the original description to indicate that the skull is a reproduction.

If your comments were not directed toward me, then I apologize for my defensive reply. Like you, I too recognize the need for primary documentation on these skulls to help us better identify and authenticate them. However, in the current absence of such information (or until it surfaces one day), we are forced to rely upon the consensus opinions reached by the knowledgeable collectors on this site and elsewhere when it comes to these particular badges. That is all I am trying to do. Like the rest of us, I continue to read and learn each day in the hopes of improving my skills.

My comment was directed at anyone who reads these lines, and these comments are based on decades of experience.

Let me also say as one who been a spectator since 1999 or so of the formation of "consensus" about SS regalia, that much of it is based on inadequate data, little or no primary sources, and, quite often, willful errors that intend to exclude others from access to a limited supply.

If such truths are hurtful or somehow enjoin significant cognitive dissonance, then an interest in SS regalia is hardly for the faint of heart.

Well said. I only asked because your comment seemed to be initially provoked by a comment about me, and you made a point of telling slados that your comments were definitely not directed at him. Thus, I was under the assumption that they were directed at a specific individual, and I thought I might be that person. Thanks for the clarification!
