The medal of the Iron Division was founded by the Association of Former member of the Iron Division in 1920 by order of the commander in chief of the volunteer Rissischen Western Army, Major General Prince Awaloff. Reception were eligible members of the Iron Division who had fought in the Baltic States. 1st Chairman of the association was Major Josef Bischoff, who also signed the loan documents. The award was entered in the defense papers. Was worn on the medal ribbon black with white side stripes.
The "Iron Division" developed from an end of the war, from November 29, 1918 from former enlisted soldiers volunteer corps, the Iron Brigade, which was to secure the withdrawal of troops and material. On January 16, 1919 Major Josef Bischoff took over the command. This entlies all unreliable soldiers, calling the remaining 300 man "Iron Division". As of February 1919, the troupe was the VI. Reserve Corps under Major General Rüdiger von der Goltz assumed. During the recapture of Riga and other operations, the Iron Division was offered particularly ruthless and to be brutal. By enlistments and merger with other organizations, the Freikorps unit in mid 1919 had grown to approximately 14,000 men. The Iron Division had at the time two Infaterie- and one artillery regiment. In addition there were cavalry troops and supplies. In August the evacuation should take place after Germany refused Bischoff command and joined his troupe and the West Russian Liberation Army under Prince Bermondt-Awaloff to. After losing to the Latvian army in November 1919, the remaining Freikorps returned to Germany. Despite impunity for desertion the Freikorps members were subject to restrictions in the choice of profession and entry into the Reichswehr.
As a supplier of the "Patriotic Flag Factory Cologne is known. This gave medals made of nonferrous metals (bronze) and alpaca silver. The prices were at 8.50 and 6.00 marks. Despite the relatively large number of troops, the medals are rare to find on the market.
