According to Lumsden, this is one of many army badges of the Danziger Leibhusaren Totenschaedel as adapted later by the Reichswehr and then Wehrmacht as found in a construction site in the environs of Berlin that was either an old Kaserne or quartermaster warehouse.

The SS employed a similar badge. This Danziger one was also used as a cavalry insignia and or traditions badge by the Prussian army, the Freikorps, Reichswehr and later Wehrmacht units to name a few.

Here enclosed are more conventional ones used by the SS.
Many patterns of these badges existed, in fact.

When I have any questions on these, I read the passages of Robin Lumsden and his excellent research.

These images are courtesy of colleague Derek from his fine collection renowned in the world.

Yet another and the variants continue in many types. These posts are also my response to your personal note to me.
Lumsden is the real expert in this material. I am an amateur.

People wiser than I think these Berliner Baugrube finds to be of the era, but I cannot say with 100% certainty that your badge is an SS badge. It may be an army badge, as well. But the SS insignia was derived from the army originally, and the early Danziger badges usually have no RZM markings (save the pieces of Steinhauer und Lueck). The past is always complex.
