The Aircraft Destruction Badge, or Tieffliegervernichtungsabzeichen is highly contentious. It was said to have been inaugurated on 12th January 1945. Some accounts state that only 16 were ever awarded, others 27, but most agree that non were as there has never been a period photograph of one in wear...ever.

It's up there with items like the Air Sea Rescue Badge, never seen in period but popping up for sale every now and then for HUGE amounts of cash!

Furthermore, the cloth tape appears to me to be of the incorrect weave and is seen on fake Tank Destruction Badges all the time. Just my opinion.

    Regards, Ned.

Hi Greg, first of all , excellent to know another Australian utilises this excellent Forum. I have been lucky enough to have known 4 SS members from LAH, Das Reich, Wiking and Hitler Jugend: you yourself would probably be well aware of the German Veteran communities that are found here in Australia. These items were given to me by one member in particular who annually attended association reunions. I cannot vouch for them other than that. Luckily 2 are still alive and after last nights posts I took and showed them the responses - they both slapped their knees , shook their heads and smiled. Hermann Wasmayer (Wiking) said " thank god then after all that I didn't have to swim the Dnieper with two bullets thru the chest"

So many stories to tell from these German veterans - we should compile a book.

My Father ended the War in the Luftwaffe (647 Schwere Flak) but ,till the day he died (1994), literally, was furious for not being released to the 12th HJ . Still he had several funny stories. In the early war years , as a member of the Hitler Youth, they used to go out in roving patrols for downed Airmen. Dad was in Volksdorf, Hamburg. The intention was that they would locate, report, escort back or administer first aid to downed enemy aircrew personnel. Dad never forgot his fear when they actually found seven aircrew from two aircraft shot down that dutifully handed over their pistols to four 12-14 year olds and a schnauzer.

Another , when the female "Flak Helpers" would say to him - " Jurgen, we need to check the forests for Airmen" ; Dad would reply " we've shot nothing down here"
and his Spiess would walk up and kick him up the arse and say " learn to eat what's put on your plate"
