Thanks a lot!
Just to add a little additional information to Adrian's post. The numbers and symbols were ordered removed a little earlier than August in a Himmler order of May 10, 1940.
The Verordnungsblatt der Waffen-SS 15.8.1940. Ziff Nr.155 just refers to removal of the piping around the collar.

Verordnungsblatt der Waffen-SS 15.8.1940. Ziff Nr.155:
Warm thanks to colleague d'Alquen for the wonderful citations. Such a pleasure to see!
Here's the full translation:
Excerpt of the RFSS order of 10 May 40:
"All other members of the Waffen-SS wear on their right patch the Sigrunen without any additions.
Officers ranked Standartenführer or higher wear the rank badges on both sides.
8.) The entire embroidery of all insignia worn on the field uniform is in matte silver grey for all SS members, on the field grey officers' tunic it is in aluminum.
9.) For the duration of the war, the cross-strap is not worn with the field grey uniform by the members of the Waffen-SS.
10.) Otherwise, the regulations in my order of 12/12/1939 apply."
W-SS Verordnungsblatt of 15 Aug. 1940:
"155. Collar- and patch cord piping.
The Reichsführer-SS has ordered that collar- and patch cord piping are discontinued for the duration of the war on the field grey blouse and greatcoat of NCOs and men."
What a fine group of collaborators we do have!
