Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

The Delich collection is the be all and end all of all such collections.

The sight of these Estonian badges levied against those of a decade earlier when the SS began is rise within the Nazi state underscores the particular character of the SS and how the issues of the second world war concerned more than merely Germany.

It is very interesting seeing the different patterns of metal insignia on the collar tabs , only one Btl I /45 was issued these during Feb 1944 as they passed through Tartu ( Dorpat ) on the way to Narva after the fighting at Meerapalu , they were produced in a local Tartu factory . Certainly from the variations seen here and also on contemporary photos other units of 20th Waffen Gren Division der SS must have arranged on seeing these metal E/Sword tabs to have commissioned more versions to be made locally or within the units !!

The Tartu factory also produced skulls which can be seen on the first photo , the design was much more like the German made skulls than the rather crude Latvian made versions !!

I am sure that Mr. Delich will be grateful for your informed explanation of his fine material. Thanks. How pleasing it is to me, at least, when the sold citizens of this site enable all to learn more and understand the past without the clatter and chatter of ego and affect that otherwise cripple these websites.

Once again, another fine thread. I have made it a "sticky".

    Thanks as always.

    Cheers, Ade.
