    Money; plain and simple.

An alleged SS presentation/honor/award/dress/whatever bayonet can be sold for a lot more money than a simple, honest, run-of-the mill bayonet.

All you need is someone willing to believe in it and unfortunately, since a sucker is still born every minute, there is a never-ending supply of such people.

"a sucker is born every minute" is a good US idiom. I wonder how it translates into German?

The embellishment of things has been ongoing since I started. It is sad. The process has destroyed many German helmets with silly decals and such.

Humankind is deeply flawed in certain elemental ways.

I cannot speak for the whole nation, but the direct equivalent as commonly used where I come from would be "Jeden Tag steht ein Depp auf."
