LAH Untersturmfuhrer tunic and visor in Australian War Memorial

Greetings. This was posted among many photos in a separate Forum by Reneblacky after his rip to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. I would not know if they were a set or any other details about them. Im sure we would all love more photos of the insignia and usual diagnostic features. Regards, Paul.

We certainly can not tell much from this picture. The cap appears to be branch piped, which is not a good sign.

Hi Bob. I had some difficulty with the photo. Here is the link to the thread where a better resolution image can be enlarged. It would be sad indeed for anything but authentic material to be on display at our nations premier war memorial.

Doesn't look too hopeful, the badges are certainly mickey mouse.

They have some wonderful aircraft in that museum, especially the Me262 and Albatross.

Thanks for your input Ben. I wonder where the museum got it? Australian forces featured prominently in North Africa and Pacific theatres but much less so in Europe ... so Vet bring-back is less likely. Next time I'm in Canberra....

Perhaps they bougt it to complete...
In Budapest, you can see SS soldiers with fake uniforms, it is in the Fort, not in the Army Museum.
Finally, we can say it's not good but for 90 % of people, there is no question : It's original.

As has been pointed out the Diggers were never in a posistion to bring this one back so it's authenticity must be in doubt !!

Only real possibility for having been obtained by Aust Forces would be liberated POWs at the end of the war-aircrew from Bomber Command or soldiers from Greece/Crete.

Many fakes reside in museums. Curators are usually not specialists in judging good from bad. The fake cap does not bode well for the rest of the display.
