Thank you. Amazing to see these tables. I see an organization coming to grips with its own existence, with its own function.

I am familiar with the Stammabteilung, but was the 8/15 Allgemeine SS member paid? Or was it a weekend warrior thing?
Wegner makes the salient point that the SS was in constant flux. Many military and paramilitary organizations are thus, but such is less obvious to hobbyists or even fetishists who are unwilling to concern themselves with history versus devotional objects.

In fact, the only way to make sense of the SS is its organizational turmoil that arose from its essence of political violence in many forms linked with bureaucracy as well as middle class values gone terribly wrong in the crisis of total war.

This fact makes Mollo far superior to Beaver and others, since the latter does a poor job of relating the organizational development of the SS in favor of show casing the items from a handful of collections, which are presented in a disjointed manner that is vaguely chronological but quite misleading.

No surprise from a publishing house without any editorial leadership other than to accumulate things.

    Good sir FB,

The appearance of SS cadres in field grey must have been an incredible affront to the Reichsheer.

I own the Pohl biography but an linguistically incapable of absorbing its content. I will revisit Wegner's work. Your curation is always appreciated.

I have never contemplated an alternate universe in which the Axis was victorious, it is a futile exercise in horror.

Thank you. The best account of the Army-SS relationship is in Klaus Juergen Mueller, Das Heer und Hitler, which I have cited often. Mueller recently died. He was a very nice guy and his book had a huge impact on me. I read it while in university in Germany right as I got my first piece of SSVT regalia.

I recently bought the Lehmann 1st vol of the Leibstandarte from Munin Verlag (ca. 1977) and it makes the note that the LAH was kitted out in field grey ca. June of 1935.

The victorious Axis thing is a world onto itself, as I am no friend of alternative history as a parlor game. What really happened is complicated enough. Life in those places where the Nazis were victorious differed according to one's place in the hierarchy.

Mitteilungsblatt der RZM June 1934The smiles and good humor of these young men likely mean that they cared nothing about the grave questions we dilate upon in these threads. Notice the lack of uniformity in said head wear, and speculate on whether any of these persons knew or care.

I would dare to say that their varying chinstraps and the Army-pattern cap eagles worn by some men did not cause them much forehead pressure...
