I've picked up a few original SS armbands lately and thanks to the forum I sleep well at night.
Getting into this militaria at a young age is difficult, but just like grammar school, We'll get everyone through it!
I went on this thread, and saw you posing in a German uniform, I thought you were wering a original one ! ! Shouldn't be doing that ! :P
Then I realise it was fake
Good stuff out there.
It's very hard to get real SS stuff here in N.Z.
There are a few private auction houses where you might find SS stuff, but online is the only way.
But as you know, once you got it you are going to keep it. So supply is low.
The reason I got a repo was for reenactment purposes only.
To wear a real one would be crazy.
I don't like fakes and people who try to pass stuff off as real.
This uniform is the only fake thing I own.
But it's a means to an end for what I want to do with it.
Still wish I had a real one though!!
Maybe one day.
It is a cruel, but no less true fact that authentic black SS uniforms are in a few hands. They have never been common, but such is easier to find today, at its price, than when I started in the 1960s. The challenges today are many times more vexing because of price, the sophistication of the fakes, as well as the fun house hall of mirrors that is signified by these sites. More smoke than light operates here, though, if you are interested in black SS uniforms, we here have done more for you than anyone else. A lot more and in detail and at great costs in time, and treasure.
Sometimes these things come to market where one can snag them, but often they change hands behind the scenes. Surely such a statement will cause even greater paranoia, but the cost of such an item is well reflected in the dealer sites, and then, if you make it to the glamor shows, you can surely get a discount.
Do not collect this material without at least several months of careful study of books on German history, the history of the SS, and especially its organization.
The leading collector in the US, who was at this more than a decade before me, told me recently that he bought an Allgemeine SS officer's uniform for 150 dollars in 1959, at which time I was six years old. My first was more than a decade later, and cost all of 275 dollars in trade....a large sum, when the 08/15 army Waffenrock cost all of 35 dollars.
