Thanks. Silver is the exception, i.e. Silbergespinst. These insignia are alu. thread. Peter Jenkins had a pattern book of early date from the RZM licensed firm, wherein the very early insignia with silver wired insignia stood out versus the later alu wire type.
The bulk of these on my uniforms are all alu. However, these things age differently. We desire that the new collector flourish, as the old collectors will eventually fade from the scene.

PS In the Stammabteilung uniform you can see the contrast between the Winkel with some silver wire in it and the alu. collar patch.

Thanks FB I was far too general in saying "silver".

    Cheers, Ade.

Please forgive me being do didactic, but as the range of evidence grows larger, I am death on a cracker about terms. Silver insignia are yet again a different thing, whereas the term of trade is alu.

I appreciate the didactic dispensing of the evidence you have gathered from the primary sources. I am in favor of such a manner as it was how I spent the vast majority of my scholastic career learning and I am comfortable with it. I see in the Preislisten the embroidered items and the dominance of aluminium and it makes sense that these are what one encounters most on the surviving uniforms.

    My thanks again.

Very nice piece and perfectly normal appearance, this piece has silver or copper wire that has aged.

ID:	302466SA insignia with silver and or copper wire. This courtesy of Bob Coleman. At some point I will find the Peter Jenkins images to underscore the differences.
I cannot find his pattern book pictures, but I appended them at some point.

Thank you for this, FB. So the use of the silver and copper wire was a historical nod to the uniforms of the imperial period and the tradition evolved from the SA to the SS with the materials changing?

Winkel always reminds me of the scenes in the Third Man with Josef Cotten and the silly black market types in the Leopoldstadt as to the correct pronunciation of same. Maybe someone can append the scene via You Tube.
You will also notice that at no time in this inquiry, did I use the phrase "text book" or the other collector baby talk that drives me batsh!t
Happy Winkels, dear collectors. I am very fond of this insignia, actually, redolent as it is of the bashing in of "sculls" and beer hall brawls which are my own personal metier.Name: Festnahme_der_Attentaeter_Sarajewo_1914.jpg
