The later eagle sure does look odd on the kepi but these things obviously happened. Interesting too is the change of behavior and body language between the two photographs.

And I wonder which of these men was alive to smile in the year 1947?

I always think that, I must tell you.

An intriguing photograph always suggests a story or subject beyond the object(s) in the frame. The ones above included.

How right you are, and many of these enthusiastic images from the glory days of the III. Reich are rich in their potential.

Wheel of Fortune (mhd gelückerat;. Mlat rota fortunae.). In poetry and visual arts of the MA. is frequently the symbol of the wheel of fortune, derived from the attribute of the ancient Lady Luck. At the periphery of one of God or Fortune's hand twisted spokes wheel arms or the needy are soared to the zenith of wealth or power, to settle down with the same swing on the other side again to poverty and weakness. In a presentation (.. From the astronomer manuscript Cod in 2352, Vienna) are - starting at 9 clock - four stations of a royal life represented: regnabo, regno regnavi, sine Regno. This is intended to earthly vanity and transience happiness be referenced. Other Wheels of Fortune ("living wheels") demonstrate the mutability of youth and maturity to old age and senility or the inconstancy of the seasons. From this screen, the Wheel of Fortune, the phrase "The wheel will turn" comes within the meaning of "Fate is going to change." One of the oldest representations of the wheel of fortune can be found in the Hortus deliciarum Herrad of Landsperg. A Wheel of Life (13th century) is shown at the south portal of the cathedral of Amiens.

How very true, indeed and the sad truth belongs here along with the propaganda pictures of the III. Reich.
