At what level, do you suppose, would these kinds of alterations of a uniform typically be overlooked? Obviously an EM/NCO would have a much harder time pulling that off than Sepp Dietrich.

Do read the extracts from Uniformenmarkt in the Muetzenfabrik thread, as well as the SS Befehlsblaetter I appended elsewhere.
The reality is much different from the misinterpretation worked by those ignorant of the past as concerns this regalia.
Dietrich was only acting like many, many, many others in the past who flaunted regulations.
and it is these kinds of irregularities that are in pain in the collectos backside .... it happened more then we would think...

It is a well known and well researched theme.
The reality of our interest is endlessly more complex than some of the terrible simplifier and internet soap box tyrants would have us believe. Thanks to Bob Coleman for his aid here from his wonderful collection. Bob Coleman along with a tiny number of others have done much to resist the tyranny of such internet savants and snake oil salespersons and their horrid effects on our capacity to learn more and do so without dreading opening our emails.
ok so the more advanced collector knows better, which leaves thousands of beginning collectors wondering at such irregularities .... yes we have some advanced collectors willing to help, but you hey when ya see a SS cap with heer eagle, first thing that comes to mind is replaced eagle .... which it might not have been...
