On something like this I would try and find out as much history as I could about where it came from. As for me I dont know about how I feel on it. The shield is not the same as I have seen on how they designed them in period photos. The rust around the edges looks to be artificially done. This is just my opinion due to me not every having my hands on something like this take it with a grain of salt.

I agree, the rust looks very even around the edge, like someone was careful not to damage the center of the piece at all. Unless I was certain of its provenance I would pass, unless it was really cheap and therefore worth the risk.
Modern fake made in Britain.
Cheers, Ade.
Thanks all for your help
Agreed. The obvious sign that this item is bogus is the shape of the shield, it should be flat topped with a scallop on the top right hand side, not scalloped right across.
The insignia itself is correct. It was chosen after a competition to design an insignia for the 12th SS Panzergrenadiers had thousands of entries.
The symbol is the Hitlerjugend sigrune crossing a skeleton key or lock pick. This was known in German as a 'Dietrich'. The skeleton key was the symbol of the LSSAH division commanded by Josef 'Sepp' Dietrich and was a nod to him. The oakleaves around the bottom of the shield are also wrong, they are not part of the SS-Hitlerjugend divisional emblem.
