It is of interest to note the differences in the type of chord used in the veils posted by greimers and Bob. Bobs example is of a finer type of chord, possibly rayon, and almost indistinguishable from the chording found in German helmet liners. This is the accepted type of chord and intricate weaving used in the few originals that have been exhibited. Naturally, a lot of the owners of genuine veils are loathe to show them and their construction in the public domain for fear of them being accurately reproduced.

The one that greimers owns is constructed of Paracord. This is not accepted as being used in genuine face veils, neither is the cotton type chord in the link I posted or burlap and carpet thread which is also used in fake veils. Also the many show a lack of weaving of the chords, as the correct pattern is difficult to reproduce, so it is either inferior or not used at all, being replaced by a strip of material.(As above.)

The only possible thing that could be entertained is that the original veil posted by greimers was made 'In the field', and that is not a provenance that is provable by a long straw I think.

Let's not forget how incredibly rare these things are, and therefore the desire to reproduce them is high.

Hi Ned, I am taking all your information onboard. I actually had no idea of the rariety of these veils. I can definitely see the difference between Bob and my example. I can also see the differences between mine and the reproduction you directed me to. I appreciate all the knowledge and experience passed on to me here on this forum. I purchased this in 1981 with a pair of SS jackboots and a Mussert Kreuz. To an extent I have been lucky in that alot of my collection has come from direct family members. What is surprising to me is several pieces that I have been given by people who I definately know were ex-serviving members (such as the SS buttons/ LAH Boards/ Fallschirmjager Cufftitle)are turning out to be fake. Both gentlemen have since passed on , I would have liked to know how they came about them. I'll still keep the veil and research what I can. Thanks again, Grant.

There is a veil currently on Hannahs Reich which shows a significant variation as well.

And Ned, you haven't been rude at all, simply informative, I have had all of this stuff for years , packed in trunks. I have only just recently discovered and joined this forum and whilst some guidance is turning out to be disappointing I am at least starting to truly learn.
