What gives it away? Trying to learn the cloth side of collecting but its very difficult. Any help would be appreciated.

well the runes are "too straight", the backing cloth (glued on) and of course the tag on It's own. It's a photocopy.

how should the backing cloth be attached on an original?
Like on the picture above. It's a kind of thin black cloth (looks like paper) and under that you can see a piece of cotton cloth used to embroide the runes on It. This technique is used on a lot of insignia, especailly on SS armeagles for Officers.
