Waffen SS tag Berlin 1939: Authentic piece?

I was recently given this by a family friend who wasn't sure about it's authenticity. Any opinions are much help and appreciated.

These have been around for 40 years now. Sometimes found made of brass too.

I've recently bought one of these but mine is brass with the number 732 on the back. Unfortunately the seller cleaned and buffed the hell out of it. Are there authentic and repro or are they all post war??
