Hi Brian, look at the insignia for starters: well known fakes. The deathshead is known as the Moustash fake, note the top lip, as it looks like a 'tash. We have talked about this one before in the past.

His story is BS! Look at the shape of the cap in the pic, then compare to the fake offered.

    Cheers, Ade.

I was thinking the same thing about the insignia, and could the cap be an Janke, and like you said Adrian, buy the piece, not the story.

    Thanks
    Brian

Yes, the cap will be a Janke made fake. Commit this one to your fake files.

    Cheers, Ade.

You have to confront this seller and tell him that he is an outright liar. This may help others being burned by this scoundrel.

the cap on the picture is a saddle-shaped cap, this one not, etc etc.

Dear Brian, Adrian is right, of course. If you want an authentic grey SS cap, Shea has more than one for sale for very high prices. Whammond has them, too, also at high prices. The pieces on these two sites I mention are quite real and fairly indicative of what such items are in reality. If others know of other reliable sources, then please say so. Of course, you can also be lucky with Viagra enhanced stories of a garage sale or some bolt from the blue sort of thing, but I never have been so blessed really. Others I know have, to be sure, but such is the exception. The price of authenticity to quite high, really. The thing is to spend the price of entry, get the affliction out of your system, and move on to 1950s lunch boxes and Pez containers. I am nearly to this stage, in fact.

sorry and thanks to Adrian for his fine leadership. PS This here so illustrated below is in the Beaver/Shea book, actually. It is the twin of the cap on the cover of the Wilkins book, two caps that Shea bought from a Midatlanic source in the early 1990s. The cap on the cover of the Wilkins book now lives in China and its twin is here....so there.

In reality, these caps are not nearly as nice as black SS officer caps, which have lots of stamps and things and were far better made than these latter caps, which are usually cheap and flimsy.

This cap here is also in the Shea Beaver book, but I sold it to a good friend.

Never use the word textbook in connection with these things.

Sometimes it is the time you have to grit your teeth and pay the retail price, to get a long term bargain. I recall hearing complaints about the price of SS visor hats when they broke $1000.00. Those that bought them, at that super-high price, for their day, are surely happy men today.

It is best to stick to honest and reputable sellers until you have the expertise to know more than any seller does.
