Well first of all, I spent 10 years in the Canadian Army..and we learned and taught there were no stupid questions...only stupid answers...however I have a question that any Gerrman Helmet may think foolish
2 months ago..before I found this forum.. I was offered 3 German lids..from the son of a Veteran...one was a 42 Pattern SS Helmet..I didn't buy it at $250 Canadian as I was told by a well known Canadian dealer that the 42's never had a single deckel...is that true??? Not that it matters.all 3 are gone now.
Not a stupid question at all in my opinion, and probably a good one because other people might be too afraid to ask I honestly don't know, but I remember reading somewhere that double decals on a certain type of helmet wasnt impossible. I just cant remember if it was an M42 or not
Hello Dean,
That's not a stupid question and i hope my answer won't be stupid either.
M42s helmets do have single decal, on the left side of the shell for the Heer, Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine and on the right side for the Waffen-SS. During the 1943 summertime, decal was discontinued for all branches of the Wehrmacht, and a bit later for the WSS (autumn 43). Until the end of the war, M42s were issued without decal....(this explanation does not include Polizei helmets).
This well known canadian dealer has to buy a good book about wartime german helmets i'm afraid...
Thanks
