Hey guys,
I'm looking for some tips on how to tell if a German helmets paint is original! Not the smooth early war paint, but the textured mid/late paint!
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Look for even, honest wear on the paint. Fakers will usually use one or both of two methods to ding up the paint on their helmets:
1. Chains. If you see a helmet with small, dotted chips taken out all over, and particularly on top of the helmet, it is suspect. Fakers basically take chains and beat the helmet with it, giving it a speckled appearance.
2. Sanding. Be wary of fine, even, and most importantly circular, uniform scratches all over the paint's surface. When helmets are sanded, it is usually done with circular motions and it can be very easy to spot evidence of this if you look closely.
Make sure that whenever you find a helmet for sale, you post it here so that it can be checked out. The people here would be glad to help you out and we can also tell you why a helmet is fake.

Mo
Only way to really know the paints is to study original helmets. There are subtle differences between the makers that only an experienced eye will notice.
