I'd like to show a Christmas present of mine to you all, it's my third TR lid now. I've wanted a beaded helmet for a while, and this one caught my eye- originally I only wanted a beaded example with the Luftschutz decal, but I really like this one, and it was nicely priced.
I'm pretty sure the paint is original due to the wear, but the application is definitely not uniform, as you can tell by the drip marks on the stamp photo- Is this common on all helmets, or perhaps a trademark of late-war manufacturing? Any comments regarding that and the meaning of the stamped marks would be great.
Also, can anyone confirm that a decal-less beaded helmet such as this is definitely Luftschutz, or could it be Polizei or for other use? I'm assuming the paint is no indication either way, as the Luftschutz helmets used different colours.
Very nice example mate This could be police or LS I suppose, but LS would be the far more numerous group so likely that. The drip marks are more a late war thing (is the liner fabric? that is also a later war feature to make manufacturing cheaper), combined with the reject / second line status of these shells; standards were much lower. This is a keeper, you can't get much better of the type. Happy Christmas
Nice late war beaded M40. I think it's a Q64 DN470 rear marked. I have seen many late war Q's with interior paint runs. If a no decal civic helmet is the Luftschutz-blue color, I lean strongly toward Luftschutz as the issue-ee. If the civic helmet is an ND painted black, I lean toward civic Police or Fire service, more strongly toward Police if the liner has a top-pad.
Cheers KradSpam, the liner is indeed fabric, not leather. What does 'NS' stand for in this context? I'm hoping not National Socialist as opposed to Post War, as I was unaware these could be, assuming I interpreted that correct! I don't think there's any markings other than the one I attached.

Thanks Brian, that makes sense. This one is obviously without the pad, so I suppose it's most likely Polizei then. From what I gather though, there weren't really strict regulations with these helmets as to specifications or what went to who in the end.
Brian, I think it is just the photos, it looks black to me, it's probably clearest in the last photo.
KradSpam, thanks for the clarification- I hadn't heard of that. I wouldn't know if they were the manufacturer or not, but if anyone can confirm a maker I'd be interested to hear.
Mat, I think your helmet is Quist manufactured. The rear marking looks like DN470. Above that should be Q64, but it does not look readable.
I suspect that late war, stocks of surplus black paint were added to increase the volume of paint batches that made factory finishes generally darker. I think this is what I see on your helmet; a very dark, late version of the Luftschutz blue. Nice helmet!
