Looks like a relic M40 helmet. Smudges under the vent would be from a decal of some sort. Judging by the missing split pin, I'd say it is also missing the liner.

wash it in a solution of ossalic acid and hot water ( 1 Kg per 3 Liters) for 40 mnts and clean it with a hard brush it will remouve the rust and take out what is left of paint and decal ( be gentle on the decal)

If you use any acid on this one you'll be left with nothing but holes all over it, leave as is

Definitely leave it, as Dave said all those tiny holes will get much bigger in acid.
